On December 10, Strem Chemicals, Inc. , had the privilege of attending SOCMA’s 91st Annual Dinner as one of two member companies that received the 2012 Educational Outreach Award from the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF) and SOCMA.
This honor marked our second consecutive year receiving this award for our educational outreach efforts, and we are very proud of this accomplishment. As pleased as we were to receive the news of our selection, we were even more pleased to learn at SOCMA’s Annual Dinner that this year’s award yielded its largest pool of applicants to date. It was refreshing to learn that so many fellow SOCMA members are engaged with their educational communities.
It is no secret that U.S. students have fallen behind their global contemporaries in the areas of science and mathematics. As an organization, we wanted to do our part to create improvements in our local communities.
Over the past few years, Strem Chemicals, Inc., set out to inspire the future members of our industry and spark interest in the sciences by dedicating a portion of our time and resources towards improving the educational standard in our local Newburyport, MA, schools. In 2012, our outreach activities included performing hands-on experiments and lecture demonstrations in K-12 classrooms. We also contributed monetary donations to local middle schools for the creation of a new science program, as well as the updating of laboratory equipment, and the safe disposal of hazardous waste.
It has been extremely gratifying to watch these students flourish as a result of our support. It is our hope that winning this award shines light on the fact that every industry member, large or small, can make a difference in their educational community. We feel that community outreach is vital to developing a brighter future for both the chemical industry and society as a whole. We thank CEF and SOCMA for recognizing its importance as part of the ChemStewards® Performance Improvement Awards Program.
A small dedication of your time and resources can go a long way for schools and educational organizations in your area. We encourage our fellow SOCMA members to continue their impressive push toward improving science education in the USA.
If your company is not currently practicing educational outreach or is looking to increase its presence, the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) would love to get you involved with its You Be The Chemist® (YBTC) programs. The YBTC programs focus on K-8 chemistry education and are an excellent means for generating community relationships. For more information, please visit the CEF website or call (703) 527-6223.
